Our Premier Record of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Claims the Number One Place.

At first glance, Lux might appear closer to an arduous scholarly challenge than the latest popular music project from an artist whose last single was a collaboration with an international pop icon. Split into 4 distinct sections and performed in 13 languages, this is a breathtaking symphonic opus investigating female mystique, spiritual ascent, and physical change, frequently via the lens of various women saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a topic handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—is launched skyward here, supported by the constant presence of a full orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within a vast list of contributors. Its sheer daring alone renders the efforts of other artists seem quite small.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that this album manages to transcend dry academic posturing feels nothing short of a miracle, with sole praise belonging to the artist. While this is not her first project to fuse the past with modern styles, the ambitions are much higher on Lux, with the tightrope walk more precarious. The element that really raises this fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich compositions, and inherent theatricality, is an essential sense of playfulness. Much like the legendary Björk during her peak, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you into its tornado. When she is breaking your heart apart, the listener nevertheless desire to be right there for the ride.

A Signature Example of Joy

This exuberant energy shines brightly on the stunning Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy for several minutes. Then, everything drops silent, and there's a gleeful laugh followed by a comment before a hilariously over-the-top string crescendo crashes down with comedic force. The song then segues to the frenetic track featuring racing orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic of this album lies in the listener never quite know—or even wish to know—what you will go to next."

Almost every song finishes at a totally different place from how it began. A track explores the transient trappings of fame over a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating in electronic chaos. Another, a song echoing her previous rhythmic style begins off moody and brooding, featuring menacing beats, until sudden traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to soften its jagged edges.

The Balance Of Art and Pop

Another crucial balancing act on Lux involves navigating the line between radical innovation and broad accessibility. This is no surprise that the album has become her highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy pop songs. One track sung entirely in the English language builds around a refrain that feels to collect increasingly infectious melodies while it spins upward. This feat gets repeated on a different expansive track that expands and constricts, weaving multiple melodies like a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song seduces with its playful, theatrical flair and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it shares with cultural impact of contemporary breakup songs, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the singing carry a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

This album is pop on a maximalist level, an ambitious grasp for capital-A artistry in an era of impending artificial blankness. It eschews self-absorption for sublime elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its own built-in ridiculousness. This is a deep well of buried gems that requires patience to fully mine but doesn't feels like hard work. Where other major pop albums of the year seemed like a meager scraps, Lux offers a lavish feast at which the characters around the table, some tipsy on holy wine, flit from conversations about historical figures, the profound sensation of soul-shattering grief, and common gossip about useless partners. It is a contemporary musical from music's truly endlessly creative visionary.
